Intensive shrimp farms in Sulawesi, Indonesia

In an article published by Indonesia-based Antara news, an Indonesian government official stated that Indonesia will bump up its L. vannamei export value by 250% from 2020 to 2024. With an estimated export volume of 168,000 MT L. vannamei in 2019 this would result in an export of around 420,000 MT L. vannamei in 2024. It’s not the first time that the Indonesian government and other industry stakeholders announce or predict rapid expansion.


Shrimp harvest India

India is one of the countries most affected by Covid-19: almost 1.5 million cases have been confirmed, more than 32,000 people have died and almost 50,000 new cases are registered every day. For the shrimp industry, the consequences were at their most severe when the country went into full lockdown for 21 days at the end of March – farmers had to stress-harvest their ponds; hatcheries could not import new broodstock; and factories did not have sufficient workers to operate at decent capacity.

Careful predictions about the impact of Covid-19 on P. vannamei demand

Sitting at home, I’ve been trying to wrap my mind around the impact that Covid-19 is going to have on global shrimp demand. I’ve been wondering whether increased retail sales would compensate for reduced food service sales and whether the abruption of logistics at origin would result in a shortage of supply. The likeliness of inventories building up makes me worry that prices will take another hit by August and September when the crop that farmers have now stocked will be harvested. Will farmers once again be forced to sell at prices that hardly allow them to break even?
