      Broodstock

      How to handle eyestalk ablation

Willem delivered a fantastic, state-of-the art overview into the extent to which non-ablation is practiced in shrimp broodstock across shrimp production countries. This study has been a key building block determining the direction for requirements on ablation in the ASC Farm standard. (Esther Luiten, Global Director Program Development ASC)

In this project, David Kawahigashi and I studied the rate of use of eyestalk ablation as a practice in hatcheries in Asia and Latin America. We then looked at the perceived consequences of not using eyestalk ablation in each region and, based on that, provided recommendations about handling this topic in ASC's shrimp farm standard.
