The Global Shrimp Feed Manufacturing Landscape: A Helicopter View

While we’re always quick to say that the shrimp industry is very fragmented, the feed segment differs from other segments of the value chain. In countries such as Ecuador and Vietnam, the shrimp feed manufacturing segment is already very much consolidated and will consolidate even further over the next couple of years. Other countries are likely to follow the same path. As consolidation increases, a relatively small number of large global and regional players from Asia, Europe, and the US is slowly strengthening its grip on the industry as a whole. With that development, the responsibility of these players to drive innovation and help farmers be successful increases. This report, while not an in-depth analysis of shrimp feed manufacturing, provides an overview of the shrimp feed manufacturing landscape and the players that shape it in Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as of the most important multinational players that drive consolidation.

This report is sponsored by: Bentoli, BioIberica, Phileo by Lesaffre, Aquaculture Stewardship Council, DSM Animal Nutrition and the Global Shrimp Forum

Feed Report

The shrimp industry is fascinating. It is a fragmented industry, largely driven by family-owned companies and hundreds of thousands of farmers around the world. More recently, corporate players, banks, investment funds, and start-ups have entered the arena and started to change the structure and dynamics of the industry. There is one thing that all these people have in common: passion for the shrimp industry. I would like to match your passion with my blog. Once a month, I will write about a topic that fascinates me.

Supporting the Global Shrimp Council and Inspiring Shrimp Consumption Promotion

Image
January 2024 Blog featured image

Amidst a global oversupply situation and historically low farm gate prices, shrimp farmers worldwide have increasingly been raising their voices in an attempt to get the message across that if shrimp production continues to increase, the industry should collectively focus on promoting sustainable shrimp consumption. Increasing consumption should lead to more stable and higher prices.

Coming Soon: Guide to the Indian Industry

In March 2024, I will publish the Guide to the Indian Shrimp Industry. As some of you may know, my career in shrimp started in India. Some 12 years ago, I lived in Chennai, in the south of India, to study the strategic behavior of Indian shrimp exporters. Since that time, I’ve stayed closely connected with the Indian industry, traveled to the country dozens of times, and made many good friends. Over the years, the passion in the industry and the hundreds of thousands of livelihoods it supports have truly inspired me.

Export Data Review of Q3 2023

Image
Shrimp harvest India

This blog will take you through shrimp export data of the first three quarters of 2023 from the world’s six largest exporters: Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and China. In Q3, the average prices of exported shrimp remained low. During this price slump, export volumes from some origins continued to grow while others dropped (Figure 1). Combined exports from these top six exporters in Q1-Q3 2023 grew slightly, increasing from 1.65m MT in 2021 to 1.85m MT in 2022 to 1.87m MT in 2023.
