The shrimp industry is fascinating. It is a fragmented industry, largely driven by family-owned companies and hundreds of thousands of farmers around the world. More recently, corporate players, banks, investment funds, and start-ups have entered the arena and started to change the structure and dynamics of the industry. There is one thing that all these people have in common: passion for the shrimp industry. I would like to match your passion with my blog. Once a month, I will write about a topic that fascinates me.

WILL THE PHILIPPINES HIT 120,000 MT OF L. VANNAMEI SHRIMP IN 2022?

In an article in Aqua Culture Asia Pacific, Zuridah Merican reported that industry representatives in the Philippines were bullish about 2019 L. vannamei production. They anticipated that L. vannamei production would reach 60,000 to 70,000 MT. Driven by the development of new farms in Mindanao and other southern regions, and intensification of existing farms in central regions such as Luzon and Cebu, production could increase further to as much as 120,000 in 2022.

WILL INDONESIA INCREASE ITS SHRIMP EXPORTS BY 250% IN 2024?

In an article published by Indonesia-based Antara news, an Indonesian government official stated that Indonesia will bump up its L. vannamei export value by 250% from 2020 to 2024. With an estimated export volume of 168,000 MT L. vannamei in 2019 this would result in an export of around 420,000 MT L. vannamei in 2024. It’s not the first time that the Indonesian government and other industry stakeholders announce or predict rapid expansion.

REFLECTIONS ON INDIAN SHRIMP IN COVID-19 DOMINATED 2020

Image
Shrimp harvest India

India is one of the countries most affected by Covid-19: almost 1.5 million cases have been confirmed, more than 32,000 people have died and almost 50,000 new cases are registered every day. For the shrimp industry, the consequences were at their most severe when the country went into full lockdown for 21 days at the end of March – farmers had to stress-harvest their ponds; hatcheries could not import new broodstock; and factories did not have sufficient workers to operate at decent capacity.

Shrimp Bytes are ready to eat and easy to digest, and will keep you on top of what’s happening in the industry. Shrimp Bytes are published regularly and are delivered into your inbox if you are on the Shrimp Insights mailing list.
