The shrimp industry is fascinating. It is a fragmented industry, largely driven by family-owned companies and hundreds of thousands of farmers around the world. More recently, corporate players, banks, investment funds, and start-ups have entered the arena and started to change the structure and dynamics of the industry. There is one thing that all these people have in common: passion for the shrimp industry. I would like to match your passion with my blog. Once a month, I will write about a topic that fascinates me.

In September 2020, India’s shrimp export volume exceeded September 2019 by 1%. This was the first time since March that India’s exporters managed to exceed 2019’s monthly performance. Between March and August 2020, monthly exports were lagging behind 2019’s exports by an average of 19%. Overall, with 413,181 MT exported in 2020 so far, India’s exports are behind 2019 by 12%. In this blog, we’ll take a deep dive into India’s shrimp export in the first three quarters of 2020 and the outlook for the remainder of the year using the latest available broodstock import data.

Open during Covid

Oh boy, has the shrimp market been difficult to read. In this blog, I will reflect on whether my forecasts about the impact of Covid-19 on global shrimp demand and supply have been right or wrong. It was, and still is, so hard to read the shrimp market in such a period of global crisis. Writing this blog has enabled me, and hopefully also you, to get a better grasp of what has been happening in the marketplace.

WILL THE PHILIPPINES HIT 120,000 MT OF L. VANNAMEI SHRIMP IN 2022?

Shrimp Bucket Philippines

In an article in Aqua Culture Asia Pacific, Zuridah Merican reported that industry representatives in the Philippines were bullish about 2019 L. vannamei production. They anticipated that L. vannamei production would reach 60,000 to 70,000 MT. Driven by the development of new farms in Mindanao and other southern regions, and intensification of existing farms in central regions such as Luzon and Cebu, production could increase further to as much as 120,000 in 2022.

With these reports, I aim to inspire you to look beyond the obvious and to gain a deeper understanding of the shrimp industry. These reports are written in such a way that they are attractive and accessible for a broad audience. The reports will be publicly available. I aim to publish two reports per year.
