In August, US Imports Dropped 10% YoY Bringing the Year Total Down 5%

In August 2024, the US imported 66,299 MT of shrimp. This is up 8% from July 2024 but down 10% year over year compared to August 2023. Year total imports have reached 478,537 MT, down 5% yearly. In August 2023, the year total reached 504,811 MT.

In August 2024, imports of shell-on shrimp dropped hard by 26%, year over year. Imports of cooked (20%) and breaded (6%) shrimp also dropped year over year. Imports of raw peeled shrimp increased by 2% year over year. Considering the year total, shell-on and cooked imports dropped 10%, raw frozen imports dropped 1%, and breaded shrimp imports were flat.

Ecuador and India mainly accounted for the YoY drop in August 2024. Imports from Ecuador in August 2024 reached 15,462 MT, down 8% YoY. Year-to-date imports from Ecuador reached 127,308 MT, down 6% YoY. Imports from India in August 2024 reached 26,302 MT, down 13% year over year. Year-to-date imports from India reached 183,436 MT, down 1% year over year.

Indonesia also recorded another drop in imports. In August 2024, imports from Indonesia reached 10,945 MT, down 7% year over year. The year total imports from Indonesia reached 83,481 MT, down 14% year over year. Imports from Vietnam in August 2024, on the other hand, reached 7,747 MT, an increase of 14% year over year. Year-to-date imports from Vietnam reached 39,605 MT, 6% more than in 2023.
